Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wins of Ruin replaces the action duel that players will be used to in major games with a more tactical and strategic form of combat. In the most basic sense, the duel is reduced to a game of rock, paper and scissors, where players try to make informed decisions about what to do.
Players can use three different types of basic attacks: speed, strength, and technical. The Speed attack will face the Power attack, the Power attack will face the technical attack and the technical attack will face the Speed attack. Which one you want to use will all depend on the enemy you face.
Monsters perform certain attacks based on their type, and after a move or two you should figure out what the Monster will do. If you throw both of the same type, you will draw and cause little damage to each other. If you throw the counter at their attack, you will do much more damage, but if they stand against you, you will do much more damage.
You will also have a helpful friend, Felyne called Navira, who will give you important information about the various monsters you face, so be sure to listen to them.
Switching weapons is essential in Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. In the middle of a fight, monsters can do something that changes the type of damage you have to do, or you can end up fighting monsters that are weak for different types in the same group. In the main combat menu you will find the menu “Skills” and one of these skills is the exchange of weapons.
It won’t be your turn, and you can even turn off Monstie in case you want to bring something new to deal with the hard counter of your current group.
If you and your Monstie make the same type of attack against the enemy, you can make a strong double attack, both of which hit at the same time, dealing more damage and creating more Kindship Gauge. Be sure to pay attention to where your Monstie is facing to see which opponents to attack.
Kinship Guage is basically your mana bar and allows you to perform skills or ride. Skills are powerful special attacks that can do more damage and all occur in the same types of damage as regular attacks.
Completing the Kinship Gauge will allow you to ride to Monstia. This will heal the rider, slowly heal Monstie, increase all stats, and open up some devastating attack opportunities.
