Griftlands is a game full of systems. The roguelike deck builder will not only give you two packs to play with three characters, but you will also need to manage relationships and permanent upgrades. These permanent upgrades usually take the form of passive effects, which you earn by earning and spending Mettle. However, another way to improve your character is to unlock new booms.
Flourish in Griftlands is a massive attack that you can make either in battle or in negotiations. Unlike regular card combat in the game, you will need to build this ability during the run. Each time you play a card, deal damage, or take down your enemies, you gain points that go to your Flourish bar. Once you get 200 points, you can activate your Flourish and cause real damage.
You only start the game with two options, but if you go to a Mettle dealer at night, you can unlock new ones with Prestige points. The only way to unlock these points is to defeat the bosses at each Prestige level. So if you take down one of the first mini bosses on Prestige 1, you will have to upgrade to Prestige 2 to get points from them again. Of course, to move to a higher Prestige level, you really have to beat the game on your current Prestige.
Each character has a total of eight different flourishes that you can unlock during battle and negotiation. You can also upgrade each of them with more Prestige points once. These new flourishes give you access to new abilities that can fundamentally change the game. For example, one of the battle booms you can buy will allow you to inflict 16 Bleed damage on all enemies. Using it against a boss can quickly reduce health.
The best part of unlocking new blooms is that you don’t have to change them between runs. Once you unlock them, you have access to them every time you activate your Flourish. That means you don’t have to decide which one you want to use until you have a lot of things. This extraordinary versatility really fits in the middle of a fight.
