With the Shadows update, the Paladins welcomed a new face (or rather a mask) to their ever-growing list of champions: Vatu, Shadow. Vatu has been described in detail in and preview of the update in early May, and as of today is available for purchase and play in Paladins. In this guide, we’ll take a look at Vata’s strengths and weaknesses, its optimal card layout, and some tips to help you become familiar with it.
Vato’s primary abilities are Ambush, Dash and Shadow Bombs.
- Dash lets Vata go forward a short distance and gets a 60% reduction in damage when racing. The dash has a very fast 5 second cooldown and can store up to three rounds. Cotton wool can use Dash vertically and can also Dash in the air.
- While using Assault, Vatu teleports directly to the enemy on his crosshairs, dealing 200 damage to all enemies in a small area around him. Within the next 4 seconds, it can reactivate the ability to attack another enemy. Thanks to Omnipresence’s talent, Vatu has twice activated Ambush for cast and can teleport to teammates.
- Shadow bombs is the ability of secondary damage to Vata damage. When he throws it, he fires three missiles, which attach to the enemy and explode a moment later, inflicting 200 damage on a small area. With the Unerring talent, the Shadow Bombs encounter enemies and have a slightly larger area of effect.
Vat’s ultimate ability is Dusk. After charging for up to 3 seconds, Vatu plunges a long distance forward, inflicting 800 damage on all enemies it passes and stunning them for 1.25 seconds. Twilight cannot be interrupted by crowd control skills, and the length of the dash prolongs the longer charging of Vata and reaches a maximum distance of 2 seconds.
Overview and game style
Vatu falls into the category of “nervous ninja,” which is an archetype inseparable from the genre of heroic shooters. In terms of the game, it’s a very mobile, stupid skirmisher. His role in the Paladins is to accompany the enemy team and select priority targets in their line: their supports and snipers. To achieve this goal, Vatu comes in stock with two separate movement abilities, which is a common feature of Paladins wing champions. Careful management of the cooldowns of these abilities is the key to successful Vatu play, as it is very fragile. He has the second lowest HP in the entire game and must get very close to the enemy champions in order to do his job.
Vatu is somewhat similar to Paladin Master Kog in both aesthetics and gameplay, but his primary weapon sets him apart. Vatu uses Kunai: a firearm that has no damage within range and does not cause any bonus headshot damage. The Kunai have run in a fairly wide arc and have a strong drop in the projectile, which reinforces the need for Vata to stay close if he wants to confirm the killing.
Thanks to Dash and Ambush, Vatu allows you to easily approach enemies. However, you should try to keep your Dash fees until you really need them, because they are your only reliable way to get rid of bad situations. It is also recommended that you include more defensive cards in your cards. Vatu can do healthy damage through his basic equipment and talents, but he could always use the impact of survival.
Fortunately, Vatu arrived at the Paladins with a very strong selection of cards at his disposal. It can create card loads and support various effective game styles. Here are some combinations to consider.
- Permanent damage: Shattered Worlds + Outnumbered + Assassin’s Tools. This charge allows Vata to fire continuously from Kunai and Shadow Bombs to remove damage without downtime. The combination works with both Unerring and Enveloping Shadows talents, but is stronger with Enveloping Shadows.
- Durability: Infiltration + Shadow Gathering. When taken with the talent of Omnipresence, this combo gives Vata a lot of extra resistance when diving on enemies.
- Twilight spam: Deadly Dash + Shadow Garrote. This reading allows Vata to use his ultimate abilities much more often. It can be especially strong against smarter teams and on less open maps such as Bazaar and Jaguar Falls.
- Safely: Final Sight + Infiltration + Gathering Shadow. This combination allows Vatu to escape the loss of combat or turn them in his favor. For the load to work, the Final Sight must be at most; such a naturally low health condition of Vatu ensures that the card is activated regularly, which gives it enough time to leak or reset.
