Klei Entertainment’s Griftlands is a roguelike-builder full of complex systems. As with other roguelike titles, your progress resets each time you die. This means that everything you earn on each attempt is gone. Everything except Mettle, that is. Mettle is a way to permanently upgrade each character between runs. Unlocking everything on each character takes a lot of Mettle, so check out our guide below to find it quickly.
Before we talk about how to get Mettle, we should first notice how you unlock it at all. Once you get to your first night in the story portion of the game, you’ll be forced into a “random event” that will take you to Mettle Vendor. This retailer is available the night after you unlock them, and provides a place to spend and buy a Mettle, as well as a place to upgrade your heyday.
As you can see, when you enter the Mettle menu, there are a lot of upgrades. You can improve everything from basic health and determination to improving the speed of gaining Flourish XP experience in battles and negotiations. A Mettle dealer will sell you some for a little money, but that’s not by far the best way to get more Mettle.
The best way to get more Mettle is to complete quests and accept enemies. In particular, you can get a lot of them at once if you choose your tasks carefully. We recommend targeting the tasks with the most Mettle early to build your base. You probably won’t beat the game on the first try, so Mettle farming makes the most sense. Not only does it facilitate later victory, but it also gives you a chance to learn more about the game under less pressure.
In addition to finding quests, with Mettle’s rewards, we also recommend looking for hard fights. We gained quite a lot of experience in fighting with the characters of the bosses. It’s a good idea to focus on the tasks until you have created a few permanent upgrades and then try to move the story as far forward as possible to face these boss characters. In a moment you will have enough Mettle to become a real energy grifter.
